Some Newcastle United supporters on social media reacted to seeing former Magpies midfielder Florian Thauvin feature for France in the World Cup on Saturday.

The 25-year-old who left the Magpies on a permanent basis in July 2017 in order to join Marseille came on as a sub to replace Kylian Mbappé with two minutes left of normal time to play.

Thauvin may have only made a cameo appearance for his nation as his country went on to successfully defeat Argentina 4-3 in the prestigious tournament but it was enough to see a section of the Magpies faithful tweet about him.

Nothing But Newcastle have rounded up the best tweets about Thauvin’s World Cup cameo appearance against Argentina:

OPINION

After watching teenage sensation Mbappe help France achieve an important win over Argentina, it was bizarre to see him replaced by Thauvin. The 25-year-old winger made only 16 appearances for the Magpies and was only able to score one goal in his outings. However since leaving St James Park the winger has flourished as in his 2017/18 campaign he scored 26 goals in 54 outings for Marseille and looks to have a bright future in football. While it didn’t work out for him at Newcastle it seems fans were happy to joke about seeing him once again even if they couldn’t believe that they were witnessing him at the World Cup. It was amusing that one fan even joked that they should put in a cheeky bid for the ex Magpies player.
