Newcastle United are in a four-club all Premier League hunt to sign Juventus midfielder Stefano Sturaro, according to Tuttosport.

The Italian newspaper claim the Magpies are battling West Ham, Everton and Leicester City for the signature of the 25-year-old midfield dynamo.

Tuttosport report the Londoners have met the asking price for Sturaro after tabling a £17.5million bid that meets Juventus’ asking price, but his destination is not decided yet and Newcastle and others are still in the race.

OPINION

Given the calibre of clubs in the market for Sturaro, few Newcastle fans will be rushing out to buy their replica shirts with his name emblazoned on the back quite yet. West Ham are said to be in pole position but they could still be out-bid by one of their cash-rich Premier League rivals. Is the Juventus midfielder worth the attention? Yes, he is. The four-times Italy international made only 19 appearances last season but he has been a key squad member since signing from Genoa three years ago. There is no shame in not being first choice in central midfield given the options available to Massimiliano Allegri, who can call upon Sami Khedira, Blaise Matuidi, Miralem Pjanic, Claudio Marchisio and breakthrough talent Rodrigo Bentancur. It appears Sturaro, who can dictate the play from the centre of the pitch, is angling for a summer move to the Premier League. Newcastle have a chance if owner Mike Ashley finds the key to his transfer war chest.
