Newcastle United have joined the hunt to sign playmaker Kasey Palmer from Premier League giants Chelsea, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that the 21-year-old is gearing up for a loan spell away from Stamford Bridge next season to help continue his development.

It is understood that Rafael Benitez’s side are monitoring the attacking midfielder, while Championship trio Birmingham City, Norwich City and Sheffield United are also keen.

Good move for Newcastle?

Newcastle enjoyed great success in the recent season by having Chelsea sensation Kenedy on loan at St James’ Park, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Palmer will follow a similar path.

The Magpies definitely need some competition for Ayoze Perez in the number 10 role behind the centre-forward and English creator Palmer would provide that.

However, the may not be ready for Premier League football yet and another spell in the Championship may be the best option for him.

Benitez needs to try add proven top-flight quality to his squad this summer wherever he can and they can surely find a better option.

Nothing but Newcastle rating:

 4/10

Likely to happen?

Palmer has spent time out on loan with Huddersfield and Derby in the last two years, which is why surely another Championship spell appears to be the more likely.

However, if Newcastle decided to ramp up their interest in him then they would be the only Premier League outfit in the running.
