Newcastle United fans on social media shared their appreciation for Joey Barton after he took a cheeky dig at Sunderland in his first interview as Fleetwood Town manager.
The new Fleetwood boss, who played 81 times for the Magpies during his playing career, shared that he was looking to test his tactical wits against the “might” of Sunderland and delivered the comments with a sly smile.
Fleetwood Town opted to uploaded that portion of the interview to their official Twitter account with his full interview available to watched on their club website.
Magpies supporters upon seeing their former star’s remarks heaped praise on Barton and said you have to love him, with another even sharing that they were now following Fleetwood on Twitter because of Barton.
The same fan even opted to tweet again about the retired midfielder’s dig at Sunderland to share that Barton truly was the gift that kept on giving.
Fleetwood Town are set to face Sunderland in the league next season as the Magpies’ local rivals suffered relegation from the Championship in their 2017/18 campaign after finishing bottom of the table.
It seems that Magpies supporters may have a new interest in Fleetwood Town’s clashes with Sunderland next season due to Barton’s presence as one fan claimed they were looking forward to seeing the match.
