Newcastle United striker Islam Slimani is set to endure a premature end to his sorry spell on-loan at St. James’ Park, as he will be suspended for the final three matches of the season.
The Algeria international joined on-loan from Leicester City in January but initially struggled with injury problems, while he has been unable to force his way into a leading role in the few matches since his recovery.
After allegedly kicking out at West Brom’s Craig Dawson during a 1-0 defeat to the Baggies last week, Slimani was charged by the FA and it’s now been confirmed that he has been issued with a three match ban.
The striker accepted the charge but argued the suspension was excessive, a claim that was denied, and Slimani will now be unavailable for the matches against Watford, Tottenham and Chelsea.
Newcastle have previously been linked with a potential permanent swoop for the 29-year-old, though it’s not clear if Rafael Benitez is still planning on such a move.
