Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez is eyeing considerable improvements to his attacking options this summer, after a campaign where the Magpies have struggled for consistency in front of goal.

The Spaniard is preparing to offload in-form striker Aleksandar Mitrovic at the end of the campaign and speculation has also suggested that Dwight Gayle, Newcastle’s current joint top-scorer with five goals, could also be on the move.

Promotion-chasing Fulham have been touted as potential suitors for the 27-year-old, though The Chronicle states Gayle is keen to remain at St. James’ Park.

With Mitrovic set for an exit and the loan move for Islam Slimani coming to an end, Gayle is set to be just one of two recognised strikers in the squad alongside Joselu and Benitez is likely to sign a new forward at the end of the campaign.

While that would put Gayle’s position in the first-team under threat, it’s stated he’s keen to work alongside any new signings and is happy with life on Tyneside.
