Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey missed out on a place in the England squad for the upcoming World Cup, and fuming fans have taken to Twitter to react to the high-profile snub.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate named his 23-man squad on Wednesday afternoon, with Shelvey a notable absence in midfield despite his brilliant form for the Magpies in the final weeks of the season.

The 26-year-old was not even named as one of Southgate’s five players on stand by, with West Bromwich Albion midfielder Jake Livermore among that list instead.

The surprise call-ups for the squad were Liverpool youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has been a revelation for the Reds this season, and Chelsea captain Gary Cahill, who was left out by Southgate last time round.

Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck was another surprise inclusion, although England’s lack of quality strikers would have forced Southgate’s hand there.

Newcastle skipper Jamaal Lascelles was another unlucky star to miss out after an exemplary season, joining teammate Shelvey in being snubbed by the Three Lions.

Fans have now taken to Twitter to react to Shelvey’s omission, with many of the Toon Army absolutely fuming at the decision.
