Alan Shearer has praised Newcastle United for a “brilliant season” after they finished off the campaign with a 3-0 home victory over Chelsea.

The Magpies end the league season 10th in the table and have enjoyed a successful return to the top flight.

Rafael Benitez’s side secured a top-10 finish on the final day courtesy of goals from Dwight Gayle and Ayoze Perez (two) to rip apart a poor Chelsea side.

Newcastle legend Shearer reflected on the 2017/18 season for Newcastle on social media and flees it has been a strong one for the club.

“Congrats to Rafa and all the players Newcastle for a brilliant season and finishing 10th. Well done AGAIN to all the fans for sticking with the team when at times it was tough,” Shearer wrote on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Newcastle delivered arguably their best performance of the season on the final day and manager Rafael Benitez deserves a huge amount of credit for the team’s success. The Magpies have managed to finish 10th in the league without serious spending and the man-management of Benitez has paid off. They surely now have to give the Spaniard a huge transfer kitty in the summer to improve the squad and he can really help them kick on in the coming years. The likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Jamaal Lascelles and Mohamed Diame have really stood up for Newcastle this campaign, which shows there is genuine quality in the squad. However, the depth remains an issue and there are a number of key areas of the pitch that need to be addressed. Perez enjoyed a brilliant run in the latter stages of the season to climb up to 10 goals in all competitions, but behind him there has been a real lack of attacking options.
