Jamie Redknapp revealed that he believes Newcastle United defeated Chelsea 3-0 on Sunday as they simply wanted it more.

The Sky Sports pundit took time to analyse why the Magpies were able to record such an emphatic win against Antonio Conte’s side, and proceeded to heap praise on midfielders Jonjo Shelvey and Mohamed Diame for their dominant displays.

“Newcastle wanted it more, it’s just as simple as that. Jonjo Shelvey, Mo Diame were dominant in midfield, and I felt sorry for N’Golo Kante,” said Redknapp in a post for Sky Sports’ website.

“He was on his own in that midfield, he had no support whatsoever.”

The three points earned from the win against Chelsea on the last day of the Premier League season saw the Magpies finish 10th in the table.

OPINION

The majority of Redknapp’s post analysing the Magpies’ game against Chelsea focused on highlighting everything Conte’s side did wrong. However it was nice for the Sky Sports pundit to take at least one small moment to heap praise on Benitez’s side as their performance on Sunday deserves all the plaudits it can get. The Magpies were magnificent and tore the Blues apart from start to finish, with several players saving their best displays till last.  Redknapp has opted to highlight the dominant performances of Shelvey and Diame in the middle of the park as they made him feel sorry for Kante, who was practically left alone to cope with the pair. Both players have been in blistering form since the start of the year and it was nice to see the duo end their seasons in style. Hopefully in the case of Shelvey, the 26-year-old’s display against Chelsea was enough to grab England manager Gareth Southgate’s attention and get him on the plane to the World Cup in the summer.
