Newcastle United have reignited their interest in Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, according to France Football.

The French outlet report that Magpies boss Rafa Benitez is a big fan of the 25-year-old, and the two have already held several discussions over a potential move.

France Football claim that Areola would cost the Magpies between £13-17million this summer.

Areola has previously been linked to the Magpies, with the goalkeeper addressing those rumours in October, as reported by the Chronicle.

Good move for Newcastle United?

If you are to look at this as a move on it’s own, then yes.

Areola has proved himself to be a more-than-capable stopper during his time at PSG, and the 6ft 4in giant has been unlucky to not make more appearances for the Ligue 1 giants.

The 25-year-old is definitely ready for a step up to become the number one choice between the sticks at a big club, and Newcastle would be a good move.

However, would Areola represent a step up from current option Martin Dubravka, whom the club look likely to sign to a permanent deal? That is up in the air.

Likely to happen?

If the report is true then it looks like Benitez is a massive fan of Areola, which could see a deal being struck this summer.

However, the Spaniard’s own future at St. James’ Park is uncertain, and that would need to be cleared up first.

Also, Benitez has openly admitted that the club are likely to sign Dubravka on a permanent deal, and that would mean the two stoppers would be vying for one spot.

Whether Areola would leave PSG to merely be doing the same at Newcastle is surely unlikely.
