Newcastle United are in talks with attacker Alex Gilliead over handing him a new contract with the club, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper state that the 22-year-old winger, who can play on either flank as well as a centre-forward, is attracting big interest from some very attractive clubs.

The Chronicle report that Gilliead’s current deal is set to expire in June, which would allow him to leave St James Park on a free transfer this summer, with the Magpies also missing out on gaining any compensation for his services.

OPINION

The Magpies are clearly working hard to block the attacker’s exit from the club, but they’ve left it late. The 22-year-old is clearly highly thought of at St James Park, as it states that the Magpies wish to secure his future before loaning him out once again to continue his promising development. Gilliead’s spent his latest season on loan at League One’s Bradford City, where he regularly featured for them by making 48 appearances all contests. While the versatile winger has never featured for the Magpies first-team, he has bundles of experience of senior football having had several loan spells in the lower divisions. As aside from his latest spell at Bradford, he also made a positive impressive when he spent time at Carlisle United and Luton Town previously. While the Chronicle’s report states that the winger has always openly said his dream was to play for the Magpies in the Premier League, if the right tempting offer is put in front of him, he might take a risk and move clubs permanently.
