Newcastle United fans destroyed new Sunderland executive director Charlie Methven after he took a clear dig at the Magpies.

The Black Cats chief, who is a public relation expert according to the Chronicle, labelled the Magpies arrogant and said that the club showed a lack of appreciation for other clubs when opening up about his feelings about Sunderland.

“I’ve been somewhat fond of from an early age — for some reason I’ve always had an antipathy towards Newcastle,” said Methven in an interview with A Love Supreme, which is a Sunderland Fanzine.

“I mean that wasn’t a determining factor in this, but it does mean I’ve always had a slight soft spot for Sunderland because I’ve always found Newcastle to be a rather arrogant club.

“From an outsider’s perspective I feel that from the North East clubs, at Sunderland and Middlesbrough there’s much mutual appreciation from other clubs, but at Newcastle there’s little appreciation for or from other clubs.”

The remarks quickly filtered through to Magpies supporters, who upon hearing, were not impressed and mocked Methven for having mentioned the Magpies in his interview.

One supporter stated that that Methven simply had to get a mention of Newcastle United in his interview somewhere, while another fan claimed that there was nothing to see, just a League One side talking about a Premier League team.

The Black Cats are set to spend the 2018/19 campaign in England’s third tier after finishing bottom of the Championship in their latest campaign.

The Magpies’ bitter rivals only managed 37 points from 46 games to condemn themselves to a life in League One next season, despite being in the Premier League during the 2016/17 campaign.
