Newcastle United have entered the race to sign West Brom’s defender Craig Dawson, according to Football Insider.

The reliable football news website claims that the Magpies have joined the pursuit of the 28-year-old at their Premier League rivals.

It is understood that Magpies boss Rafael Benitez is keen on the English centre-back and has placed him on his summer wishlist.

The report details that the 6ft 2in enforcer is already attracting interest from a number of top-flight clubs in England and that West Brom will have a battle to keep him if they are relegated to the Championship.

Good move for Newcastle?

Dawson is currently in a brilliant run of form and he looks like someone that would be a huge success at St James’ Park.

The versatile defender, who can play anywhere across the backline, has proven himself to be a quality player in the Premier League.

He has played an integral role in West Brom’s mini revival in recent weeks to give them a slim hope of safety and been a mainstay in the five-game unbeaten streak in the league.

Likely to happen?

Dawson has reportedly emerged on Newcastle’s radar, but there will surely be a huge queue for his signature if he does become available at the end of the season.

The Magpies do boast Premier League football next season and know they will have to strengthen, but could need some financial backing to land West Brom’s ace.
