Newcastle United pushed themselves ten points clear of the relegation zone following a 2-1 victory over Leicester City on Saturday, extending their winning run to three matches and putting the Magpies on the brink of securing their top-flight status.

The turnaround of Rafael Benitez’s side in recent months has caught the eye, with the improved performances from the likes of Jonjo Shelvey helping to revitalise the club’s form- and he’s earned plaudits from his skipper.

Quoted by Chronicle Live as stating after this weekend’s win against the Foxes, Jamaal Lascelles said:

“I thought it might take us to show the character and step up to take the game by two hands and Jonjo led the way in that sense with his goal.”

“He’s been waiting for that to happen and it couldn’t have happened in a more important game and Ayoze Perez showed resilience to chase the ball down and he was causing problems all game.”

“I thought overall right from our goalkeeper to the front two, we were on our game.”

Shelvey’s first Premier League goal of the season has been a long-time coming but has proven to be extremely valuable.
