Newcastle United look set to renew their rivalry with Sunderland on the transfer market, as both sides are set to be eyeing a talented young defender.

The Sunderland Echo reports that the Magpies and the Black Cats are both keen on 19-year-old Hartlepool United midfielder Josh Hawkes, who has forced his way into the first-team for the non-league side this season and scored on his debut against Bromley.

Sunderland are reported to have been keen on scouting Hawkes during a behind closed doors game recently, which Hartlepool rejected, and the fight for his services is fierce as Championship pairing Leeds United and Middlesbrough also hold an interest.

Hawkes has one-year remaining on his deal at Victoria Park and Hartlepool, who have struggled financially this season, could be tempted to cash-in and earn a major profit, easing the pressure on their bank balance.

With the lure of potential Premier League football, Newcastle would be difficult for the teenager to turn down but he may get more regular opportunities with one of his Championship suitors.
