Newcastle have significantly boosted their survival hopes in recent weeks with crucial victories, including the 1-0 win against fellow strugglers Huddersfield Town last night out.

The narrow win has put Newcastle on-course to retain their top-flight status for another year but the Magpies harbour some fitness concerns heading into this weekend’s tie against Leicester City, following the withdrawal of Mohamed Diame in the game against the Terriers.

Rafael Benitez has downplayed the importance of the Senegalese international, stating both Isaac Hayden and Mikel Merino are more than capable of filling in, but Diame has stood as one of the brightest players in the squad since the turn of the year.

Thankfully, Diame is aiming to be fit against the Foxes and told The Chronicle that he’s hoping for another victory.

“Everything is all right at the moment. We just need to keep going, as I have said before, it is important to finish as high as possible and then have a different target next season.”

“We don’t want to be fighting relegation all the time. We are now on a good run, we go to Leicester with a lot of confidence. We’ll try to win there too.”
