Newcastle United have put themselves on the brink of securing their Premier League status after a run of three consecutive victories saw the Magpies open a ten-point advantage over the relegation zone.

Whilst Rafael Benitez insists safety is not assured until Newcastle hit the 40-point mark, the Magpies are in a fine position and sit just two points off that target- and safety is expected to be secured in the coming weeks.

Former Arsenal star Ian Wright believes that is a tremendous achievement for Benitez’s side and has hailed the Spaniard’s leadership, with Newcastle currently sat tenth in the Premier League despite having a small budget.

Speaking to Radio 5 Live, Wright said:

‘When you’ve got a manager who can go into the market and get a player like Kennedy and a goalkeeper like that. This is why I was praying someone like Tammy Abraham would have went there, and I keep saying it, because it would be an unbelievable place to score goals at and build.’

‘I watched him the other day and he come against United and I’m seeing some improvement.  It’s the kind of place under Rafa with someone like Kennedy who he knows from Chelsea, very skilful player very creative and all of sudden you can start to bring in these players and then hopefully he can get some money.’

‘Newcastle finishing tenth with what they’ve got is an amazing achievement.’

Further work is needed from Newcastle if they’re to retain their top-half finish but their run of form suggests the feel-good factor at St. James’ Park will continue.
