Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has continued his quest to command funds from the board to invest in the summer market, insisting he cannot work miracles every season.

The Magpies have surpassed expectations this season, fighting to safety and within touching distance of a top-half finish before the season comes to a close next month- despite Benitez having to work with a very restricted budget.

With Benitez’s future still far from certain, pressure is falling at the feet of Mike Ashley once again and the Spanish boss has cranked up the heat, telling Sky Sports News he cannot achieve the same feats every year.

“I cannot do miracles every year, so then you have to have the tools to be sure that you can do your job.”

“I like to win, I want to win games and I want to win trophies. I want to be capable of competing and if you want to compete in the Premier League or this market, then you have to compete in everything. Then if you have the tools to compete, you can win.”

“I’d like to do that and at the same time, I like to improve players, coach players, follow a business plan, a realistic business plan in modern football. I have no problem with that because I did it in the past.”

Newcastle’s four match winning streak came to a close last night after a 1-0 defeat against fellow top-half chasers Everton.
