Newcastle United have safety within their grasp in the Premier League, as they enter the international break with a promising four point advantage over the relegation zone- and a game in hand over some of those below them.

Rafael Benitez’s side have had to endure an inconsistent season at St. James’ Park but the Spaniard could be handed the perfect opportunity this summer, as a long-term target is said to potentially become available at the end of the season.

The Daily Mirror state Championship high-flyers Fulham will look to sell captain Tom Cairney for £20m at the end of the season if their push for a return to the Premier League is not successful.

27-year-old Cairney caught the eye of Newcastle last summer, after scoring 13 goals and securing ten assists last season, but the Cottagers made it clear they didn’t want to sell- though the situation seems to have changed in recent months.

Newcastle face rival interest in the market for Cairney from fellow Premier League sides Watford and West Ham, both of whom could easily fund a deal for the Scotsman- whereas the Magpies may have to round-up funds.
