Newcastle United had to endure a difficult period during the January transfer window, as Rafael Benitez lacked the required funds to get permanent deals over the line and instead had to venture into the loan market.

The Magpies landed Martin Dubravka, Islam Slimani and Kenedy on-loan until the end of the season but did attempt to lure players to St. James’ Park permanently, including making a move for Danish international Nicolai Jorgenson.

Feyenoord rebuffed Newcastle’s advances for a player who has scored eight Eredivisie goals this season and the 27-year-old admitted it was frustrating, though he opened the door for Benitez to renew his interest this summer.

Speaking to Tips Bladet, he said:

“It was a little annoying. Of course it is always nice to know that there is a club that will pay so much money for one, so of course it gave me confidence, but at the same time a little bit of sigh. It is of course a big dream for me to end up in such a league.”

Newcastle may well reignite their interest in Jorgensen this summer, with loan acquisition Slimani yet to kick a ball for the club, but would have to offer a fairly large fee to the Dutch side in return.
