Jonjo Shelvey is desperate for Newcastle to register a surprise victory at his old club Liverpool this weekend, as he awaits the results of a second scan on his injured knee.

The 26-year-old midfielder was hurt in a collision with Martin Dubravka in the latter stages of the 2-2 draw at Bournemouth last Saturday and is a doubt for the visit to Anfield, where he spent three seasons after moving from Charlton Athletic in 2010.

And, while he waits to learn the severity of the damage to his knee, Shelvey is relishing the chance to face his former employers.

“You always want to go back to a club and win and do well, for obvious reasons,” he told NUFCTV. “It’s an added incentive, but you have got to see it as just another game as well because you don’t want the occasion to get to you. You’ve just got to take it in your stride.

“We picked up a good result earlier in the season when they came up here, but obviously they’re a fantastic team, with a fantastic squad, a fantastic manager and a fantastic stadium.

“It’s going to be a tough place to go and play football, but it’s nice to go back there. They’ve had the new stand added on, so It’ll be nice to go back with that now.”

It’s clear that Shelvey is optimistic about being able to play on Saturday, although it may be that Rafa Benitez may choose not to risk him with bigger games on the horizon.
