Newcastle United face a crucial test in the months ahead as they seek to secure Premier League safety and an incredible challenge lies in wait against Manchester United this weekend.

The Magpies head into Sunday’s game just a single point above the relegation zone, tackling a side battling for a spot in the Premier League’s top-four and one that has arguably the most depth in England’s top-flight.

Newcastle may not have that depth but Benitez is close to be able to choose from a fully fit squad, as he told The Chronicle that Jesus Gamez and Florian Lejuene are both close to a return, whilst January loanee Islam Slimani also isn’t too far away.

“Gamez is getting better. I was talking to him and he says he feels better. Lejeune has also been training with the team and that’s also good news.”

It’s not yet clear whether either of Benitez’s summer recruits will be available for this weekend’s clash but Newcastle can expect to welcome them back to contention for their upcoming games, which include crucial tests against fellow relegation contenders Bournemouth and Huddersfield.
