Mourinho’s miserable record at St James’ Park

Few stadiums can send a cold shiver hurtling down the spine of ‘The Special One’. But St James’ Park is a venue that Jose Mourinho must dread coming to. It may come as a surprise to many, but Mourinho has never tasted victory in a league fixture on Tyneside. Let that sink in for just a second. Mourinho, one of the greatest managers to have ever lived who can boast three Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, a UEFA Cup and countless other trophies on his CV, has NEVER managed a team to victory at St James’. Six games, three draws and three defeats that spans two spells at Chelsea.

Astonishingly, the Portuguese has failed to get the better of Graeme Souness, Glenn Roeder, Sam Allardyce, Alan Pardew and even Steve McClaren. It’s an omen that should give hope to Rafa Benitez, his players and, crucially, the Newcastle supporters. And there’s no doubt Benitez would love to continue that trend on Mourinho’s first visit to St James’ Park as Manchester United. Long may his misery continue…
