Newcastle United have been handed a huge boost in the January transfer market, with the news that their prime target is keen on a move to Tyneside.

The Chronicle reports that Newcastle remain keen on Feyenoord’s Eredivisie winning striker Nicolai Jorgensen, who is understood to be open to a transfer this week to join the Premier League side.

Newcastle have reportedly made a £14m bid for the striker, who scored 21 goals last season, but their initial approach was rejected, with a deal for the 27-year-old forward likely to have to eclipse the club-record £16m fee paid for Michael Owen in 2005.

However, Newcastle will be encouraged to make a fresh offer with the news that Jorgensen is interested in a move to help the Magpies in their battle to avoid relegation, potentially impact by the return of Robin Van Persie to his boyhood side last week.

The defending Eredivisie champions are open to a sale as they currently sit a whopping 17 points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven but a significant offer will need to be made to lure the Dutch side into a sale.
