Newcastle United are desperate to improve their options in attack during the January transfer window, as they seek additional firepower to a side which has scored just 20 goals in 22 games this season.

The Magpies have been linked with a host of names, with the majority being from fellow Premier League sides, but a fresh report from Italian outletĀ Corriere Dello SportĀ attributes Rafael Benitez’s side with interest in Hellas Verona’s Mohamed Fares.

21-year-old Algerian international Fares is natural on the left-wing but can also play at full-back if required, though Newcastle face a fight with Italian giants Napoli and Inter Milan if the reports from the continent are correct.

His current side are sat 19th in the Serie A, battling to avoid relegation, and it may be difficult to turn down an offer for the youngster if a bid is made- and he may seek a move to bolster his standing in an Algeria side that’s set to experience major changes after failing to qualify for this summer’s World Cup.
