Newcastle United are poised for a busy end to the January transfer window, as the Magpies seek to secure major additions in their quest to fend off the threat of an immediate return to the Championship.

Rafael Benitez’s only signing so far is the addition of Brazilian starlet Kenedy on-loan from Chelsea but the latest reports suggest one of the South American’s compatriots could be making a very late move to Tyneside.

The Sun claims Gremio have offered highly-rated forward Luan to Newcastle ahead of Wednesday’s transfer deadline, with the Magpies offered the opportunity to sign the Olympic gold medal winner for a £17.5m fee.

Luan, a highly versatile attacker who can play across the front line, has been attributed with interest from Liverpool in the past but the reports indicate that Newcastle could steal a march on other interested sides- although they’d have to move quickly for the 24-year-old.

With two caps for Brazil, Luan will have ambitions of playing in the World Cup this summer and a transfer to Newcastle this week could significantly improve those chances- although the Magpies don’t have much time to thrash out a deal.
