Newcastle United are set for a crucial end to the January transfer window and it seems Mike Ashley will have to put his money where his mouth is.

The Magpies received a boost this week with reports that Ashley was preparing to sanction a deal that would eclipse the club-record £16m paid for Michael Owen in 2005, a deal that took place before the Sports Direct magnate took charge on Tyneside.

It quickly emerged that Feyenoord forward Nicolai Jorgensen is the prime target for Newcastle and further boosts were provided when it emerged the 27-year-old striker was keen on a move and that the Eredivisie side are willing to sell.

However, Newcastle have one final hurdle to leap over as Dutch outlet De Telegraaf states that Rafael Benitez’s side will have to offer around £22m to get their man- a significant amount higher than the £14m initial bid that the Magpies lodged.

Newcastle want to conclude a deal as soon as possible, ahead of a crucial run of fixtures where they face Burnley, Crystal Palace, Manchester United, Bournemouth and Liverpool.
