Newcastle United are set to be bolstered with the first of what Rafael Benitez hopes will be three signings during the January transfer window.

The SunĀ states in it’s printed edition on Monday (page 52) that the Magpies are on the verge of bringing Crystal Palace full-back Pape Souare on-loan until the end of the season, with the signing potentially becoming permanent in the summer.

Souare has played just three matches for the Eagles this season, all of which have come off the bench, and Newcastle’s relegation rivals are prepared to sanction a departure; especially as they have Jairo Riedewald, Patrick van Aanholt and Jeffrey Schlupp as cover.

The news comes with it looking unlikely that Newcastle will land Kenedy on-loan from defending Premier League champions Chelsea, with the Blues struggling to find a replacement and Antonio Conte keen to ensure his squad has the required depth for their battles across all competitions.

Benitez, meanwhile, wants to add a new goalkeeper to his first-team squad and is seeking to land a striker on-loan to improve his misfiring forward line.
