Newcastle United’s takeover talk continues to remain extremely complicated, with the Magpies slipping into the Premier League’s relegation zone this weekend.

Rafael Benitez’s side have secured just one point out of the last 28 available, losing eight of their last nine matches, but the Spaniard’s position does not stand under threat as Amanda Staveley is keen for the experienced boss to remain in charge.

The Daily MailĀ states that Staveley, who remains likely to complete a takeover after promising discussions with Mike Ashley, wants Benitez in charge of the club- but the delay in completing a deal has led to further complications.

Magpies owner Ashley is likely to have to fund transfers in January, with a deal before the New Year looking extremely unlikely, and he’s unlikely to hand the funds that Benitez feels he needs, as the Spaniard seeks two or three new recruits.

As such, the danger of relegation is increased and the next five games over the Christmas and New Year period may be crucial to the long-term future of the club.

The Magpies travel to West Ham this weekend before hosting Manchester City in the days after Christmas, then facing crucial clashes against fellow strugglers Brighton, Stoke City and Swansea City in the weeks ahead.
