Newcastle United are planning to bolster their squad in January with fresh additions and the arrival of new faces could lead to further moves behind the scenes.

The Chronicle reports that Rafael Benitez is seeking a new first-team goalkeeper in the January window and is prepared to let highly-rated stopper Freddie Woodman leave the club for the second-half of the season.

Woodman, who raised his profile as part of the England U20 side that won the World Cup in the summer, has failed to earn first-team opportunities at Tyneside but will be given the opportunity to get crucial experience under his best in the New Year.

Newcastle’s move will make space within their squad and will also help with the development of Woodman, who has reportedly been told by the FA that he needs more first-team football if he is to be considered for England’s U21 side.

Woodman is tipped as the leading candidate to be Newcastle’s first-choice goalkeeper in the coming years but may have to wait a little while longer to get that chance, particularly with the Magpies struggling so far this season.
