Newcastle United are fighting to bring an end to a poor run of form and cement their spot in the Premier League, which will likely lead to a flurry of activity in the January window.

Rafael Benitez is keen on improving his squad from the front to the back, with a new goalkeeper on his wish-list as he seeks to improve the defensive strength within his side.

Portuguese outletĀ Jornal de NoticiasĀ states the Magpies are interested in bringing Spanish veteran Iker Casillas to St. James’ Park in the New Year, who is currently with Porto after a spectacular career with Real Madrid and the Spanish national side.

The World Cup winner worked with Benitez previously during their time together in the Spanish capital and the pair enjoy a good relationship, which increases the chances of a deal going ahead in January.

Now 36-years-old, Casillas is certainly in the twilight years of his career but he’d still be an impressive coup for the Magpies.

This seems to be a similar situation to Newcastle’s bitter rivals Sunderland, who’ll also surely be looking to sign a new goalkeeper with Robbin Ruiter not cutting the mustard.

The Black Cats are desperately struggling near the bottom of the Championship table, and we’re unlikely to see a Newcastle v Sunderland match any time soon.
