It’s crunch time for Newcastle United as they rapidly approach the January transfer window but have the busiest spell of the Premier League season before the New Year.

The Magpies have struggled for form in recent months and a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Leicester City on Saturday extended the winless run of the Tyneside outfit to seven matches- leaving them sat just two points, and two positions, above the relegation zone.

Rafael Benitez is therefore keen to bolster his squad in January and The Sun reports a potential boost for the Magpies, with Manchester United defender Luke Shaw seeking a severance package to leave the club in the New Year.

Shaw has remained out of favour at Old Trafford under the tenure of Jose Mourinho and an exit for the England international seems increasingly likely, although Newcastle are not prepared to meet his £20m asking price.

That figure would see Shaw become the club’s record signing, surpassing the price paid for Michael Owen over a decade ago, but the latest reports may indicate that the young defender is keen to rekindle his career elsewhere.
