Newcastle United are edging closer to a takeover of the club with Mike Ashley set to accept a second bid for the club from Amanda Staveley and her consortium PCP Capital Partners.

Ashley rejected Staveley’s original bid of £250 million for the Magpies, however with the Sports Direct owner keen to push through the sale of the club before Christmas, he is thought to be prepared to accept the improved offer of £300 million that was lodged in recent days.

The Geordie businessman has been at the helm of the club for just over a decade, and has plenty of controversy during his time as the club’s chairman.

The news that he was to sell the club was greeted kindly by Newcastle fans, however there were growing fears that a takeover wouldn’t happen after a first offer was rejected.

With the new offer closer to Ashley’s valuation of the club however, The Sun believe takeover is impending and could happen within the next fortnight.

A sale of £300 million would see Ashley over double his investment, having bought the Tyneside outfit for just under £150 million back in 2007.
