Newcastle club legend Alan Shearer has backed his former side to gun for Europe once again if the right owner takes over the club.

Current owner Mike Ashley is reportedly on the verge of completing the sale of the Tyneside club to Amanda Staveley and PCP Captial Partners for around £300 million.

Ashley had declined Staveley and co.’s first offer of £250 million, however is now close to accepting the second higher bid due to his desire to be free of the club before the January transfer window.

And Alan Shearer – who is the club’s all-time record goalscorer – says Staveley could be the person to take the Magpies back to the prime time.

When asked if he believes that in the future Europe was a possibility, Shearer told Coral: “Yes, I do.

“The current owner doesn’t want to be there so sooner the better the takeover happens for everyone. Rafa needs investment in that team; I thought it was going to be a long, hard season anyway but he needs new players in January and for that to happen there needs to be investment.” he continued.

“Whether the takeover can happen that quickly to give Rafa funds remains to be seen, but that current owner doesn’t want to be there.”
