Newcastle United face a testing time ahead in January as Rafael Benitez must make crucial decisions on his squad, as he seeks new signings and potentially approves exits.

Amongst those potentially on the way out is striker Dwight Gayle, who has struggled for form this season but has shown improvements in recent weeks, scoring the opening goal against Chelsea- though the Magpies went on to lose that match.

With Joselu and Aleksandar Mitrovic to compete with, as well as the potential of new attackers arriving in January, Gayle faces a crucial test in his future and a decent offer may be difficult for Newcastle to reject in the New Year.

The Birmingham MailĀ states that Championship leaders Wolves are interested in signing Gayle in the New Year, after his stellar display in the second-tier last season helped propel Newcastle to the title.

Wolves do have alternative options, consisting of Derby’s Chris Martin and Bournemouth-owned Lewis Grabban, so interest in Gayle is likely to depend on the asking price that Newcastle place upon him.
