Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez is remaining optimistic despite seeing his side drop into the Premier League’s relegation zone, having lost eight of their last nine matches in the league.

Next month’s transfer window is crucial for the Magpies and their battle to retain their status in the top-flight, with takeover talks behind the scenes continuing to rumble on- although there were positive noises coming out of Tyneside last week.

Benitez is looking to add at least two players to his squad in the New Year and is confident that new signings can provide a vital boost. Speaking after a 1-0 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates stadium, the Spaniard said:

“We are where we are. “We have to manage the situation the best way possible, and the best way possible for me is to stay calm, keep working hard and try to get a result. If we get to January, and we can add some players to give a lift to the rest of the team, we have to do it.”

“We knew we were missing in some positions, and we have seen over the whole season what has happened. “In some positions, we need competition. We have to do it.”

Newcastle are set to fall short of their 20 point mid-season points target after taking just one of the last 28 points available and now face crucial matches in their next five games during the Christmas and New Year period.

The Magpies travel to West Ham this weekend before hosting Manchester City next week, then facin fellow strugglers Brighton, Stoke City and Swansea City in the weeks ahead.
