Newcastle United have hit a crucial stage in their season and need vast improvements in the coming weeks if they’re to put an end to their plummet down the standings.

The Magpies have secured just one point from the last 18 available and now sit just five points above the relegation zone, heading into Saturday’s crunch tie with mid-table Leicester City.

Takeover talks continue to rumble on behind the scenes but there is still no indication on when a deal could be completed, leaving the fans, and indeed the squad, in the dark as to what the future holds.

The situation is the same for Magpies boss Rafael Benitez, who told The Evening Chroniclhe has ‘no idea’ what January holds- whilst insisting his current squad is good enough to secure top-flight status.

“We have to improve, but yeah, to stay up I think (we have the quality). To stay up, I think so. But when people talk about these games, this is the Premier League. We know we have to improve a lot of things, but still we will be a team in the bottom half of the table,”

“We have to keep working harder. We knew from day one that we will be in the bottom half of the league. It’s not a surprise to anyone.”

Newcastle have a mammoth eight games before the January transfer window opens, as the club enter the busiest period of the year.
