Newcastle United are one of a number of clubs who have sent scouts to watch FC Porto striker Vincent Aboubakar in action over the past few weeks.

Manager Rafael Benitez is desperately on the hunt for a new striker after the New Year, with his current crop of forwards managing only eight goals between them so far all season.

And the Spaniard is thought to believe Aboubakar could be the man to fire the Magpies to safety after finding themselves in the relegation zone nearly half way through the campaign.

The Cameroon striker is one of Europe’s most in-form hitman at the moment, having fired in an impressive 19 goals for Porto already this season, including five in Champion’s League.

His current total already equals his best ever in a single season, having hit 19 whilst on-loan with Turkish side Besitkas last season.

Should the Magpies wish to prize away the Cameroonian from Portugal however, it is thought they will have to pay a hefty fee with the striker having only recently extended his contract with Porto to 2021.

West Ham are also believed to be interested in Aboubakar.
