Newcastle United are interested in signing Bristol City star Josh Brownhill after the New Year, reports TeamTalk.

The 21-year-old joined the Robins from Preston last season and the club are now locked in talks over a new deal to fend off Premier League interest.

Brownhill’s current contract with City expires at the end of the season, meaning he could leave the Championship club on a free transfer come next summer, and City are desperate to keep hold of a player they consider to be one of their brightest talents.

Newcastle are joined by Bournemouth, Leicester and Burnley, as well as Derby County in their chase for the Robins star, who is expected to command a fee of around £1 million.

Brownhill has made 12 appearances for City this season, scoring two goals, and the midfielder has been the star player for Lee Johnson’s side, who currently sit 3rd in the Championship after 20 games played.
