Newcastle scouts are reportedly tracking Besiktas defensive midfielder Tolgay Arslan, according to Fotomac.

The Magpies are said to have had representatives in the stands watching striker Cenk Tosun for Besiktas’s 1-1 draw against Monaco on Wednesday night. The striker scored the equalising goal against the Ligue One side, but it seems Arslan also impressed the scouts at the match.

Newcastle are struggling for central midfielders currently with Mikel Merino sidelined with injury and Jack Colback not part of manager Rafa Benitez’s first team plans. Isaac Hayden was also not fit enough to start against Burnley on Monday so Mo Diame was employed in a deeper role.

The lack of cover could mean that the Magpies may look to sign another holding midfielder in January to provide some support for Hayden. Arslan, like Tosun, is German born and moved to Besiktas in 2015 after a six year spell with Hamburg. He has made 14 appearances in all competitions so far this season for the Turkish club.
