Alan Shearer has insisted that Newcastle fans should remain positive despite a difficult month for Rafael Benitez’s side.

The Magpies are still without a Premier League point this month, and their 4-1 defeat to Manchester United at the weekend made it three consecutive top flight defeats.

Despite taking the lead at Old Trafford through Dwight Gayle, Benitez’s side came out on the end of a terrific United performance, led by the returning Paul Pogba who registered both a goal and an assist.

Shearer, who as at the game, says the Toon army still have plenty of reasons to be positive after the loss.

He said on Match of the Day: “It’s been a disappointing time with the last three results for Newcastle fans.

“But they’re sat just below mid-table; 14 points after 12 games. I think the manager, the fans and even the players would have accepted that before the season started.”

Newcastle welcome Watford to St James Park next weekend as they look to end their winless run.
