Newcastle United fans will be excited ahead of the January transfer window, particularly if they have money to spend on a takeover, and there’s plenty of interesting stories floating around.

Perhaps the most confusing of all is brought to us by Sports Witnesswho state Portuguese outlet A Bola have linked Benfica defender Lisandro Lopez with a move to the Premier League- though they fail to offer any evidence suggesting that’s the case.

Lopez is reportedly surplus to requirements for the Portuguese giants, along with Inter Milan loanee Gabriel Barbosa, and it’s claimed Lopez is being pushed towards the Premier League- particularly pushed towards Newcastle.

Sports Witness recently did some digging into the Lopez case, amidst reports of talks with the Argentine ace, and the defender’s agent reveals there is interest in his client- but he knows of none from Rafael Benitez’s side.

“The truth is that about Newcastle we didn’t not know anything. At least nobody talked to us, but yes, there are several interested.”

The 28-year-old would provide some experience to Newcastle’s back-line, potentially helping them push away from the threat of relegation, but Benitez’s focus in January looks to be orientated around finding a top-class striker.
