Newcastle United are eyeing improvements in January to help consolidate their position in the Premier League and Rafael Benitez seems intent on securing international talents for his squad.

Already boasting a side with a number of established international players, Newcastle United are now seeking the services of a highly-coveted Senegalese defender to bolster their ranks.

Turkish Football reports that the Magpies are battling the likes of Huddersfield Town and Crystal Palace for the services of Anderlecht defender Kara Mbodji, who’s valued at an affordable £10m.

The 27-year-old is also a target for a trio of Turkish sides, including Galatasaray and Besiktas, but Newcastle are keen to bring the player to the Premier League, ahead of his likely involvement in the World Cup next summer.

Mbodji will be seen as a player to shore-up Newcastle’s defensive ranks, as they’ve conceded an average of a goal a game this season, but the fight for the experienced defender’s signature will be fierce- and that could drive the price up.
