Newcastle United are looking to offload controversial striker Alexandr Mitrovic in January, reports the Chronicle.

The Magpies had previously tried to sell the Serbian striker in the summer, however were unable to do so due to a lack of interest.

However after a number of club’s signalled interest in recent months, including newly promoted Brighton, it is thought Mitrovic will be made available for transfer after the New Year.

The Serbian is currently Rafael Benitez’s third choice striker behind both Joselu and Dwight Gayle, and has limited game time this season.

The 23-year-old has started none of the Magpie’s ten Premier League games so far, and managed to pick up a three game suspension for a nasty challenge on West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini back in August.

It is not the first time the striker has fallen into hot water in Tyneside, also picking up a four game suspension at the start of last season, and being sent off against Arsenal early in to his career with the Magpies.

Rafael Benitez will hope the money raised from his sale can go toward’s reinforcing his front line, with Liverpool star Danny Ings one of a number of strikers linked with a move to St James Park.
