Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal star Paul Merson says Rafael Benitez should utilise Alexandar Mitrovic more often.

Mitrovic has failed to start a Premier League game this season for the Magpies, and has admitted his frustration, hinting he could leave the club after the New Year in search of first team football ahead of next summer’s World Cup.

A number of clubs, including Brighton and Southampton, are understood to be interested in the Serbian.

Merson however, believes the controversial striker should be the man to lead the line at St James’ Park, especially considering Benitez’s first choice striker’s, Joselu and Dwight Gayle, poor start to the season.

“I don’t really see much up front for Newcastle.” said Merson prior to this weekend’s clash with Watford.

“I’m not sure why Rafa Benitez doesn’t play Mitrovic more. He’s a presence and can put himself about.

“I think Dwight Gayle maybe needs someone beside him to bully people, and then hit them with his pace.”

Newcastle welcome Watford to Tyneside this Saturday with Rafael Benitez’s side looking to bounce back from a run of three consecutive top flight defeats.
