Newcastle United are keen to bolster their attacking lines in January following a poor run of form, which has seen them lose three consecutive matches and win just one of their last six.

The Magpies have struggled for consistency in front of goal, with summer signing Joselu netting just twice and Dwight Gayle only opening his account this weekend, which means that a new striker is likely to be top of Rafael Benitez’s January shopping list.

A number of names have been mentioned but amongst the most recent is Leicester City striker Islam Slimani, who Le Buteur report is a target for the Magpies and their Premier League rivals Everton in the New Year.

Algerian international Slimani has struggled since moving to the Premier League, netting eight goals last season but failing to find the net this term, and the Foxes may look to cash-in as they have the likes of Jamie Vardy, Shinji Okazaki and Kelechi Iheanacho in their squad.

Costing Leicester £29m when he signed from Sporting Lisbon, Slimani definitely won’t come cheap and Newcastle would likely have to exceed the club-record £16m that was paid to Real Madrid to sign Michael Owen over a decade ago.
