Arsenal icon Paul Merson has revealed he was ‘disappointed’ with Newcastle’s defeat to Burnley on Monday night, but still expects Rafael Benitez’s side to beat Bournemouth this weekend.

The Magpies lost 1-0 to Sean Dyche’s side earlier in the week in what was a drab affair at Turf Moor, a ;te Jeff Hendrick strike proving to be the difference between the two sides.

The defeat bought to an end an un-beaten October for Benitez’s men, and Merson was disappointed that Newcastle couldn’t deliver what should have been a routine victory.

“I was really disappointed with Newcastle on Monday night (losing 1-0 at Burnley).” said Merson speaking on Sky Sports.

“If I’m being honest, the only plan they looked like having was Jonjo Shelvey.

“It was a game you thought, ‘go and try and win here and kick on’, but it did not look good to me.”

Bournemouth go into the weekend’s clash on the back of a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea, however did manage a crucial victory over Stoke only a week earlier.

Merson however, still expects Newcastle to run out victors on Saturday afternoon.

“Bournemouth got a good result at Stoke but I am going to go 2-1 to Newcastle.”
