Newcastle are set to battle out with Everton for the signature of out-of-favour Leicester City striker Islam Slimani this January, reports Le Buteur.

The Algerian international signed for the Foxes in a club record deal worth £29 million in the summer of 2016, however after a lacklustre first campaign, now finds himself surplus to requirements and behind the likes of Jamie Vardy and Shinji Okazaki in the striking pecking order at the King Power Stadium.

With playing time limited this season, Leicester could be willing to cash in on their asset to try and recoup some of the money spent on him, with a host of clubs including Everton, West Ham and Newcastle looking to lure him away from the East Midlands.

Newcastle are looking to bolster their attacking line after a poor start to the new season for the club’s strikers, who have managed only 5 goals between all three of them so far in all competitions.

Slimani is expected to cost any potential suitor in the region of €20 million.
