Newcastle United fans hoping for an immense splash of cash in the January transfer window following a takeover could be set to be disappointed, following comments from Rafael Benitez himself.

The Magpies have faced a turbulent period during the past week, with Amanda Staveley and PCP seeing an opening bid for the Premier League side rejected by Mike Ashley, but negotiations are rumbling on behind the scenes.

Ashley wants to complete a sale before Christmas but that seems to be increasingly unlikely given the current time frame but whenever a takeover is completed will seemingly make no difference to Benitez’s January budget.

Speaking to BT Sport at the weekend, Benitez suggested his spending amount will ‘more or less’ be the same after a takeover.

“If something happens it would be better for everyone. Another message that is very clear for the fans is not that a new owner will come and spend £100million in the transfer window. No chance.”

“Our money will be more or less the same. At this moment, I met Lee Charnley and we are working on our targets and that is it.”

Newcastle’s priority for the mid-season window will be a new striker to lead the line, with the current crop of forwards struggling for consistency.
