Arsenal have leapfrogged Newcastle to become favourites to land Stoke City star Xherdan Shaqiri.
The former Bayern Munich and Inter Milan star finds himself as a lone star performer in an otherwise lacklustre Potters side, and has been heavily linked with a move to pastures new after the New Year.
Naturally, a host of top flight club’s ears popped up when it was rumoured Shaqiri could be on his way out of the Bet365 stadium, none less so than Newcastle.
The Magpies were thought to be keen on landing the Switzerland international to bolster their front line after a hit-and-miss start to the campaign in front of goal.
With Rafael Benitez not thought to have money to spend in January anymore amidst confusion over the club’s potential takeover, Arsenal are now favourites to land the Swiss star, with Arsene Wenger too keen to improve his attacking options.
Shaqiri may well be seen as a replacement for the seemingly outbound Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott, both whom are widely expected to leave the Emirates in January.
